 Yves Van Gerven has practiced EU and Belgian competition law and regulatory law at the Brussels Bar since 1989. His area of expertise also covers commercial law, with a special focus on regulated industries (e.g. telecoms, energy and transport), and contract law. He litigates cases before the EU Courts and the Brussels and other national courts.
From 1995-1998, Mr. Van Gerven was référendaire of the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg.

- Currently represents companies and EU institutions in litigation before the EU courts covering competition, state aid, customs law, antidumping and chemical legislation (biocides).
- Advises and assists clients in competition law matters, covering cartel and abuse of dominance investigations initiated by the European Commission and the national competition authorities, and merger clearances.
- Advises clients on EU and Belgian law regulatory matters, including market access, internal market and REACH.
- In the specific area of electronic communications, represents operators in competition and regulatory proceedings before national telecom regulators and the courts, and advises on issues such as interconnection, roaming, call termination, mobile access and the imposition of regulatory (price) obligations.
- Assisted clients in a variety of sectors ranging from foodstuffs, beverages, consumer goods, gambling and chemicals to regulated industries (gas, electricity, inland waterways, airports).
Honors and Awards
Mr. Van Gerven is recognized as a leader in his field in the 2009 edition of Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists. He has been recognized as a leader in the area of telecommunications, media and technology in Belgium in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 editions of Chambers Europe, and in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions of Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers. He is listed in multiple editions of Who's Who Legal: The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers for his regulatory communications practice, and was selected as one of the world's leading competition/antitrust attorneys for the PLC Cross-border Competition Handbook 2006/07.
Publications
Mr. Van Gerven has published a number of articles on EU competition law, State aid law and general topics of EU law. Every two years, he serves as co-author of an overview of the case law of the EU Courts in the leading Belgian law review on commercial and economic law (Tijdschrift voor Belgisch Handelsrecht / Revue de Droit Commercial Belge), where he writes on anticompetitive state measures, the application of the EU competition law rules on public undertakings and State aid law.
